The Avianese: The Scariest Breeders of Wizard-Kind

The "Avianese" were a manufactured clan of witches and wizards that predated the 19th century, who's history is still greatly shrouded in mystery despite the heavy research into them after their downfall. Many older history books have a brief chapter dedicated to the Avianese as proof to students and scholars that the Wizarding World is full of endless possibilities, but many corrupt souls will attempt to manipulate the gifts magic has blessed unto humanity. You'll be hard-pressed to find any Magical Creatures activist or Professor that does not know of the eccentric Avianese.

Originating in the Shetland and Faroe Islands, the Avianese pursued domination, creation and innovation that revolutionized new-age weaponry and effeciency in travel across large bodies of water. The founder of the Avianese, Erium Gascoyne, always had a deep obsession and fascination with birds. Historians speculate that growing up on a limited island with his magical prowess made him feel isolated and trapped, hence his respect for the concept of flying. Magic-born in those Islands did not have it as easy as those on the mainland due to their limited resources and efficiency in communication, causing disdain which planted a seed of bitterness in Gascoyne. He pledged to himself that he would do anything in his power to become a powerful wizard despite his disadvantages and began to pursue his dream in his teens.

Time pressed on and Gascoyne, once he'd acquired the proper materials, began experimenting. He used techniques such as alchemy and the Engorgement Charm to manipulate birds he'd managed to capture, increasing their size exponentially and attempting to alter their moods. He'd successfully rallied other wizards and witches on the Isles that held his same views for the mainland, and subsequently assisted him in his work - soon to be dubbed the Avianese. He began to experiment on Birds of Prey, hoping to create an ultimate masterpiece, and possibly a new species of magical creature altogether.

Sooner than later, Gascoyne had a small army. Falcons, Hawks, Owls and Eagles were cross-bred and experimented on to create large, flying killing machines. Going mad from his fixation on overtaking the mainland and finally achieving flight, he even attempted to begin turning himself into a bird of prey. He soon became a sickly mutation of man-bird from implanting avian DNA in himself and was far too eager to get his feet off the ground. Once he felt he was equipped well enough to assault, he rallied his Avianese and took off for Scotland. The wizards on the mainland were perplexed to see a large, airborne mass move towards the land like an eerily rolling thundercloud, but it wasn't too long before chaos broke out on the cliffs of Northern Scotland.

In the intoxication of finally achieving flight and travel, Gascoyne had failed to consider the likelihood that mainland wizards and witches would be more well-versed and well-equipped for dueling than him and his kin. After a tedious battle on the cliffs, many of the Avianese had perished and Gascoyne's mutant engorged birds of prey had evacuated the premises. His final choice was to be outnumbered and die himself, or test his wings that he spent so many meticulous hours attempting to perfect. As he was getting cornered and his heels began scraping against the precipice, Gascoyne spread his arms and took a leap of faith. The Scottish wizards rushed to the edge to see if his body hit the water or flew, but they saw nothing when their heads looked down at the crashing waves against the jagged rocks. Gacoyne's body was never discovered.

To this day, people still wonder if giant, mutant birds roam the oceans. Such fables have become horror stories that keep children in Northern Scotland up at night.
